Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
316 PM PST Tue Feb 20 2018

.SYNOPSIS...
Below normal temperatures and periods of snow showers over the
mountains will persist through the week. Stronger system may move
across the area early next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
A very cold airmass over Northern California will bring below
freezing conditions to the San Joaquin Valley with temps falling
to 25 to 30 degrees. Increasing cloud cover tonight should keep
temperatures from cooling as much as the previous few nights over
the Sacramento Valley, but frost is still possible. Widespread
freeze and hard freeze conditions have occurred over the past few
days. Isolated low lying areas could see temperatures drop into
the upper 20`s, however most locations will range from 30 to 35
overnight.

Weak system passing over the Coastal range and Shasta
county tonight may bring a few light showers/snow showers,
including a light dusting possible even in the valley around
Redding.

A cold system from western Canada will bring periods of snow
Wednesday night into Friday morning. Snow levels will be low with
this system around 2000 feet. A dusting of snow is possible down
to 1000 feet. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, with
localized amounts up to 8 inches, are expected. have issued a
winter weather advisory for the Sierra and foothills. Still, some
uncertainty in track and timing of this system, as euro differs
from nam/gfs.

&&

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Saturday THROUGH Tuesday)

Cold weather and mountain snow continues to be the story in the
extended forecast. A shortwave trough will slide through the
western US on Saturday, producing enough lift to bring a slight
chance of mountain snow showers. Models have backed off on the
intensity of this system, limiting precipitation to only a few
inches of snow. Current model runs continue to suggest a wet
pattern through early next week. Although specific models are
divergent on an exact solution, a wetter storm is expected to
impact NorCal early next week. At this time, precipitation looks
to remain over the higher elevations Sunday before spreading into
the valley by Monday. Daytime temperatures expected to remain a
few degrees below normal in the mid to upper 50s for the valley
and 20s to 40s for the mountains. Cold overnight temperatures will
continue with valley and foothill lows in the mid 30s and
mountain lows in the teens to 30s. HEC
&&

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions with light winds across all TAF sites next 24
hours. Light snow showers over northern mountains overnight,
spreading south after 6z Wednesday. -RA possible over KRDD and
KRBL after 9z Wednesday. HEC
